چکیده

Motivated by the ubiquity of time series in oceanic data, the relative lack of studies of geostrophic turbulence in the frequency domain, and the interest in quantifying the contributions of intrinsic nonlinearities to oceanic frequency spectra, this paper examines the spectra and spectral fluxes of surface oceanic geostrophic flows in the frequency domain. Spectra and spectral fluxes are computed from idealized two-layer quasigeostrophic (QG) turbulence models and realistic ocean general circulation models, as well as from gridded satellite altimeter data. The frequency spectra of the variance of streamfunction (akin to sea surface height) and of geostrophic velocity are qualitatively similar in all of these, with substantial variance extending out to low frequencies. The spectral flux P(v) of kinetic energy in the frequency v domain for the QG model documents a tendency for nonlinearity to drive energy toward longer periods, in like manner to the inverse cascade toward larger length scales documented in calculations of the spectral fluxP(k) in the wavenumber k domain. Computations ofP(v) in the realistic model also display an ‘‘inverse temporal cascade.’’ In satellite altimeter data, some regions are dominated by an inverse temporal cascade, whereas others exhibit a forward temporal cascade. However, calculations performed with temporally and/or spatially filtered output from the models demonstrate thatP(v) values are highly susceptible to the smoothing inherent in the construction of gridded altimeter products. Therefore, at present it is difficult to say whether the forward temporal cascades seen in some regions in altimeter data represent physics that is missing in the models studied here or merely sampling artifacts.

Ocean Circulation Kinetic Energy: Reservoirs, Sources, and Sinks

The ocean circulation is a cause and consequence of fluid scale interactions from millimeters to 10,000km. Although the wind field produces a large energy input to the ocean, all but about 10% appears to be dissipated within about 100m of the sea surface, rendering very difficult observations of the energy divergence necessary to maintain the full water column flow. Attention thus shifts to the...

The distribution of eddy kinetic and potential energies in the global ocean

Understanding of the major sources, sinks, and reservoirs of energy in the ocean is briefly updated in a diagram. The nature of the dominant kinetic energy reservoir, that of the balanced variablity, is then found to be indistinguishable in the observations from a sum of barotropic and first baroclinic ordinary quasi-geostrophic modes. Little supporting evidence is available to partition the sp...

Topographic generation of submesoscale centrifugal instability and energy dissipation

Most of the ocean kinetic energy is contained in the large scale currents and the vigorous geostrophic eddy field, at horizontal scales of order 100 km. To achieve equilibrium the geostrophic currents must viscously dissipate their kinetic energy at much smaller scale. However, geostrophic turbulence is characterized by an inverse cascade of energy towards larger scale, and the pathways of ener...

Does the subdominant part of the energy spectrum due to downscale energy cascade remain hidden in quasi - geostrophic turbulence ?

In systems governing two-dimensional turbulence, surface quasi-geostrophic turbulence, (more generally αturbulence), two-layer quasi-geostrophic turbulence, etc., there often exist two conservative quadratic quantities, one “energy”-like and one “enstrophy”-like. In a finite inertial range there are in general two spectral fluxes, one associated with each conserved quantity. The energy spectrum...

Large-scale energy spectra in surface quasi-geostrophic turbulence

is studied. The nonlinear transfer of this system conserves the two quadratic quantities Ψ1 = 〈[(−∆) ψ]〉/2 and Ψ2 = 〈[(−∆) ψ]〉/2 (kinetic energy), where 〈·〉 denotes a spatial average. The energy density Ψ2 is bounded and its spectrum Ψ2(k) is shallower than k in the inverse-transfer range. For bounded turbulence, Ψ2(k) in the low-wavenumber region can be bounded by Ck where C is a constant inde...
